Appendectomy

An appendectomy is surgery to remove the appendix, most often to treat appendicitis. Once the appendix is removed, appendicitis cannot come back.

How it is done

  • Laparoscopic appendectomy: the appendix is removed through one to three small incisions using a camera and small instruments.
  • Open appendectomy: the appendix is removed through a larger incision when needed.

Many patients go home about a day after surgery if there are no complications. Dr. Brown will review your symptoms and imaging at your consultation and discuss which surgical approach fits you best.

Get emergency care for pain that starts near the belly button and moves to the lower right abdomen, especially with fever, nausea or vomiting. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
